An Audience of One

It’s amazing to watch my son grow. All the little developmental milestones, from crawling, to standing up on his own, to opening doors, to trying new foods and making new sounds. Owen will be a year old in a couple weeks and to be honest, this year feels like one of the longest in my life! It’s been so full, so fun and so challenging all at the same time. Owen’s expressions, his variety of moods, his blossoming personality, and the way he takes in and loves those around him keep me in awe, and on my toes.

The other day while nursing, I sang him “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” When I finished singing, he stopped, looked up into my eyes and applauded!! “Thank you!” I said. Since then, he’s been applauding after every song he hears. Whether it’s in the car, listening to his Grandma, Linda, or at home listening to Paul Simon or Ella Fitzgerald. Whenever a song ends, be it over speakers or live from his mama, he claps his hands and smiles. Owen’s love for music is evident in the way he listens and appreciates melody, rhythm and harmony.

I’ll never forget the first time he looked up at me and clapped when I finished singing the song. It’s as if he was saying, “Bravo! That was beautiful, Mom!  Will you sing me  another?” My son is my audience of one.
